Dibrugarh central jail is considered the most secure and well-fortified prison in the state and one of the oldest prisons in northeast India.
It was constructed in 1859-60 by the British on 15.54 acres of land. It is one of the oldest and well-fortified prisons.
The jail compound has been surrounded by Assam Police’s elite Black Cat Commandos, CRPF and other security personnel.
Amritpal Singh has been kept in a special cell under tight security.
A team from Punjab Police is present in the jail along with personnel of Assam Police.
Language barrier could be another reason that will prevent him to connect with other inmates and the local jail staff.
Dibrugarh Jail has never had prison break incident in its nearly 170-year history.

Amritpal Singh came to the Rodewal Gurudwara on Saturday night. He himself informed the police about his presence and that he will surrender this morning at 7 am.
He also recited Jupji Sahib. He then thanked the people in Gurudwara who came for prayers.
Ever since he arrived in Punjab in 2022, he has been engaged in giving a new push to Khalistani Movement by leading marches calling for the protection of rights for Sikhs.
There are serious apprehension of unrest and creating discord in the states by his aides and associates causing disharmony among people, attempted murder, attacking police personnel and obstructing public servants’ lawful discharge of duty.
Assam Chief Minister HimantaBiswaSarma said that the transfer of Amritpal’s aides to Dibrugarh jail is a part of police-to-police cooperation and that it is not the first time that criminals or fugitives of one state have been transferred to another state jail.
Additionally, authorities have claimed that the Dibrugarh jail is better equipped to manage inmates with a capacity to house 680 prisoners.
It is indeed a wise step by the security agency to keep him away from his native state.
